Benediction of the Missionaries of Charity, 1998.
Watercolor and ink on paper, 18 x 24"
I created this watercolor painting after a visit to Mother Theresa’s convent in Kolkata, India. I was living with my Aunt, stationed in India and I came back to her apartment and began to paint from memory these beautiful little saintly sisters, kneeling in benediction. The floors where cobbled stones and had to be incredibly uncomfortable, but still then knelt and prayed. The room was dark from the overcast light from the polluted Kolkata streets, but inside the chapel was serene. Later I noticed that there are 12 of them praying and I love when things like that happen in my paintings.
